United States President Donald Trump said Iran’s leadership had canceled mass hangings that were reportedly scheduled in the wake of nationwide protests.
Posting on social media, Trump wrote, “I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (Over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you!”
Iran has not publicly confirmed any plans for executions or their cancellation. Trump’s announcement followed his repeated warnings that the United States would take action if Tehran continued killing protesters.
The protests erupted on December 28, 2025 over economic hardship and escalated into widespread demonstrations against the clerical regime. Opposition groups and an Iranian official reported thousands were killed in the unrest, the worst since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Residents in Tehran and northern cities said streets had been relatively calm for several days, starting from January 14, though rights groups reported ongoing heavy security presence and sporadic unrest in some areas.
The U.S. is expected to send additional military assets to the region, maintaining heightened tensions despite the temporary lull in protests.
